Net Zero for Water Utilities

In a welcome development for Ireland’s waterways and environment, the latest report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows a continued decline in nitrogen concentrations in major rivers. The data, covering the period from January to December 2024, highlights a positive downward trend in nitrate levels, reinforcing improvements that have been observed since 2019. 

This is encouraging news for water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and efforts to meet environmental targets. Nitrogen, particularly in the form of nitrates, is a key concern for Ireland due to its impact on freshwater and coastal ecosystems. Excessive nitrogen levels can lead to issues such as algal blooms and reduced biodiversity, making this reduction a step in the right direction. 

The report indicates that while concentrations remain higher in certain areas, particularly in the southeast, where agricultural activity is more intensive, the overall trend is one of improvement. This suggests that mitigation measures, including improved nutrient management practices and targeted interventions, are beginning to show results. However, sustained efforts will be essential to ensure continued progress. 

Despite the reduction, nitrogen remains too high in the southeastern half of the country, and further reductions will be needed to bring levels to a satisfactory standard. Agriculture is the primary source of nitrogen in Irish waters, with cattle farming being a significant contributing factor. Cattle produce large amounts of manure, which contains nitrogen. When not managed effectively, nitrogen from manure and fertiliser runoff can enter waterways, increasing nitrate concentrations. Additionally, compacted soils from livestock grazing can reduce the soil’s ability to absorb water, leading to greater nutrient runoff. The sector is actively implementing measures to reduce nitrogen losses, including improved land management practices, optimised fertiliser application, and better manure handling. However, ongoing and sustained actions will be needed to further lower nutrient levels and enhance the ecological health of Ireland’s waterways. 

One of the challenges in managing nitrogen levels is obtaining accurate, real-time data on nutrient concentrations in water bodies.
